Course themes

The Creative process and effective documentation

If our creative process employs the same method used for documenting our designs, then our scope of creative expression will be limited to what can be express in the form of line drawings.By recognising the creative process as something quite different to that of documenting, we can expand our the range of creativity in unexpected ways. And to accommodate this we also need to increase our methods of documenting.

The aesthetics and practicality of designing irregular shapes

Cars, yachts, boats, furniture, landscaping, ceramics, cutlery, sanitary fittings, hardware, toys, sports equipment, shoes, jewelry...are made from flat and curved surfaces. If everything was flat-sided and right-angled, like our buildings, shoes would not fit, planes would not fly and cycling would be acrobatic. Designing with curves and straights is a fast emerging architectural movement, something we can't just ignore.

Co-creating to enhance both the designer and the project

Most education systems stigmatise mistakes. They're premised on the idea that learning happens by correcting mistakes. Maybe with spelling and science but not with something artistic. We're effectively taught to shut out creativity to avoid criticism. The subliminal rule is; strive for average to avoid being out-standing. We can however work together without criticism, while maintaining a high level of growth, respect and personal satisfaction. It's here that vulnerability is recognised as a strength.

This course is for curious architects, willing to learn and go beyond.

We do support you in the search for truly innovative ideas. No more copy-paste! We talk about communication that supports the creative process.  We offer the knowledge and the chance for you to develop your skills and take the first step to a more audacious approach to innovative freedom.
By the way, architectural students, engineers, landscape designers and designers are more than welcome, after all, how many times we work together, on the same team, right?

We all know what CPD usually stands for but with us think of it as, Creativity, Passion and Design.

Accredited by SAIA (South African Institute for Architects), Over The Edge | Live-online is validated as a Category One CPD activity, and South-Africans can get 6 CPD credits. Hey, don’t worry if you are not from South Africa – you can also get your CPD credits. Our course is also recognized by the UIA (International Union of Architects).

Module 1

3-day curriculum

Day one

The white flat elephant

Why is designing with physical models, surfaces and volumes, critical for sculptural design?

The language of surfaces

How to introduce, with assertiveness, curved surfaces in your project, through understanding the ABC of shapes?

Effective Documentation

Most of the methods used to document working drawings are inadequate (or inefficient) for a sculptural design. How to solve this problem and make the documentation process efficient without compromising creative freedom?

Creativity 101

Learn to think with your hands: improvising to directly access the unexpected. How can you be amazed by your own creative potential and your project?

Time for reflection

Looking at your journey, where personal and professional areas overlap into one individual, where are the golden opportunities in your life?

Day two

Documenting 2D Shapes

5 indispensable techniques that we use to ensure that our innovative design will be built precisely as we designed it.

Form follows Feeling

What kind of experience do I want to offer to the user of the space I am designing for? Experience how feelings are essential to make your projects timeless.

The art of conversation

How to instantly boost the dynamism of our discussions so that we become a reliable and abundant source of creative ideas?

How to preserve a group work atmosphere that is enjoyable, creative, consistent, and effective.

Time to Reflect

In what situations do you observe yourself saying ‘maybe later’ or ‘who knows later’? What changes can you make when you change this way of thinking / acting?

Day three

Documenting 3D Shapes

3 advanced techniques to ensure that the complexity of your project will be executed exactly as designed.

The alphabet of form

How to create volumes and shapes so that your constructions evoke certain sensations and feelings appropriate to their use.

A simple off-page technique

How your projects can be extremely expressive and fun, without breaking the budget.

In the spotlight

We want to touch the nerve of what motivates you personally, helping you focus on producing your work feeling more inspired, creative and equipped with tools.
